Biologically inspired coalition formation of multi-agent systems

Coalition formation is an important coordination problem in multi-agent robotics when a particular task cannot be accomplished by a single robot. We draw inspiration from the male bottlenose dolphins, which form varied levels of alliances to increase their chances of mating. We model the multi-level alliance formation of dolphins using tools from hybrid systems and embedded graph grammars in order to develop a decentralized coalition formation algorithm for a heterogeneous multiagent system. Through simulations, it is shown that the model is rich enough to mimic the biological phenomenon of building alliances; yet, it is simple enough to be implemented in engineered systems.
